SEV-003 HIGHLIGHTS OF SEVASTOPOL
Duration: 4.00 Hrs

Tour Price: $139
Date: July 10, 2012 8:30AM

A drive through the chestnut tree-lined streets of Sevastopol begins your tour of this popular seaside resort. Surrounded by large, calm bays, this well-recognized military city was formerly a navy base for the Soviet Union's Black Sea fleet. During both the Crimean War and WWII, the city played an important defensive role which earned it the honor of twice being declared a Hero City. Completely destroyed in WWII by German forces, the downtown area was subsequently rebuilt and today features beautiful Mediterranean-styled homes with columned balconies and graceful arches situated along shady cobblestone avenues. Many of the city's historical landmarks such as the Main Post Office and Art Museum have been carefully restored to their original elegance as well.

Your first stop is at the Panorama "Defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855", canvas by the famous Russian battle artist F. Roubaud that is a monument to the heroes of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. The original canvas was nearly destroyed in WWII and although plans were made to later restore it, the damage was so severe it was impossible to do so. Happily, this magnificent work was recreated in its entirety by 17 Moscow painters over a period of three years in the 1950s, allowing for its continued enjoyment by visitors from around the world.

Proceeding on, you'll next visit Vladimirsky Cathedral, a beautiful Byzantine-styled church. Also heavily damaged during WWII, if you look closely, you can still see bullet holes within its white exterior walls. Leaving the church, you'll travel past the Observation Platform and Lenin's Monument before driving to Malakhov Kurgan, site of the battle of Malakhov and where you will find the Eternal Fire that commemorates the siege of Sevastopol
during the Crimean War. A museum of notable war memorabilia is located at the site of the imposing Malakhov Defensive Tower, a great stone fortification erected to protect the city from assault. Ample time is allotted for you to explore the museum's exhibits before journeying back to the ship, enjoying views of Nakhimov Square, Primorsky Boulevard and Grafskaya Quay along the way.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of walking and numerous steps to negotiate and is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Hats and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Guest wishing to conclude the tour at Primorsky Boulevard may do so, but must find there own way back to the ship. Women will need to have their heads covered to visit the Cathedral. The order of sites visited may vary.
